Part One: The Dream
Santiago is an Andalusian shepherd boy who dreams twice of treasure buried near the Egyptian pyramids. A mysterious king, Melchizedek, appears and tells him this is his Personal Legend - his destiny. Santiago sells his sheep and begins his journey.
Part Two: The Desert
In Tangier, Santiago is robbed and left with nothing. He works for a crystal merchant to earn passage to Egypt. During this time, he learns that the journey itself is the treasure - each setback contains a lesson.
He joins a caravan crossing the Sahara. At an oasis, he meets Fatima and falls in love. He's tempted to stay with her, but she tells him he must fulfill his Personal Legend or their love will turn bitter.
Part Three: The Alchemist
An alchemist appears who can transform lead into gold. He teaches Santiago that true alchemy is spiritual transformation - the journey from ordinary to extraordinary. The universe speaks a "Language of the World" that those on their true path can learn.
Together they travel through dangerous territory. The alchemist teaches Santiago to listen to his heart, even when it leads toward fear and uncertainty.
Part Four: The Treasure
At the pyramids, thieves beat Santiago and demand his treasure. Laughing, one tells of his own dream - of treasure buried under a church in Spain where a shepherd once slept. Santiago realizes the treasure was at the church where his journey began.
He returns to Spain, digs beneath the sycamore tree, and finds the treasure. But the real treasure was the journey itself - what he learned and who he became.
